David Bowie Debuts at US Billboard Chart Peak with Blackstar

Just a week after his death, legendary British rocker David Bowie has achieved a feat that eluded him during his lifetime, hitting the top of the US Billboard album chart with the just-released Blackstar.

Bowie died of cancer on January 10, just two days after both his 69th birthday and his final studio album’s release. Blackstar took the chart’s premier position from Adele’s 25, ending a run of seven weeks at the summit for that popular album from another British music icon.

Bowie was hardly alien to chart success in his adopted country of the United States, having reached number two with his penultimate studio album The Next Day in 2013 and fourth position with the pop single “Let’s Dance” in 1983. Nonetheless, it was in Europe that he had enjoyed more mainstream success during his lifetime.

Even if you’re still relatively unfamiliar with Bowie’s music, the jazz-heavy Blackstar is a great collection to start with. We give both Bowie and Blackstar special attention in the current issue of AppleMagazine – subscribe to get your copy now.
