It seems that DC Comics is not only moving forward with its Blue Beetle movie but that it has also found its star in Xolo Maridueña, best-known for his role in the hit series Cobra Kai. The young actor was recently revealed as the studio’s choice for the titular role. The young Hispanic actor has become quite popular thanks to his Cobra Kai role and many fans became excited when DC Comics officially confirmed the casting.
“The only thing that is on my mind right now is just the fact that he’s Latino. I have so much pride in getting to be a part of this project with Angel, someone like him,” Maridueña said on the casting. “I think it’s so important, and I don’t want to stand on the soapbox for too long but representation is so important.”
This makes complete sense, as the Hispanic community hasn’t been that well represented in mainstream movies as, for example, African-Americans and Asian-Americans, with the latter gaining more prominence after Parasite’s Oscar win and through last year’s family drama Minari. The young actor further shared his excitement by saying: “It’s such a great opportunity, and I’m not going to take it lightly, and we’re about to make a kick-ass movie.”
As for the preparations for the role, Maridueña has a solid background in martial arts roles, which should make preparations a bit easier. He explained: “Luckily I have a background in martial arts and training in that kind of realm but this is a whole different game, this is like the big boys, so I’m ready to pack on a couple pounds and hit the gym.”
Blue Beetle is still some time from hitting the screens, but this HBO Max exclusive will make a lovely addition to the DCEU and will certainly be one of the most-streamed movies on HBO Max when it comes out later.
