Disney announces price hike for Disney+, introduces ad-supported tier

Disney

Disney is the latest company to announce a significant price hike.

The entertainment giant has confirmed that it will introduce a new ad-supported tier of Disney+ in the United States for $7.99 per month, and as a result, it’s increasing the price of the standard subscription by a whopping 38% to $10.99 per month. It’s one of the most significant price hikes we’ve ever seen for a streaming company.

The price hike and new ad-supported tier will come into effect on December 8, so consumers still have time to lock in a discounted annual rate if they wish to do so. At the same time, the company will increase the price of its Hulu subscription service to $14.99, up from $12.99 per month, from October 10. Hulu’s ad-supported tier will climb from $6.99 to $7.99 per month in the United States, with similar increases expected internationally.

Disney offers a bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ for $13.99, and this will climb to $14.99, whilst an ad-supported version will be available for $12.99.

The company made the announcement during its latest earnings call, where it confirmed it gained another 14.4 million subscribers. It now has more than 221 million subscribers, overtaking Netflix for the first time.
