Disney has confirmed its streaming service has hit the 100 million paid subscriber milestone.
The company announced at a shareholder meeting that Disney+ had gained an additional 5 million subscribers since mid-February, demonstrating the immense growth of the platform.
Speaking of the milestone, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said: “The enormous success of Disney+ –which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers–has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content.”
The entertainment giant has set itself a target of 100 new titles per year across Disney Animation, Disney Live-Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, and said that its direct-to-consumer business was now the “top priority” for the company, having previously revealed that all future Disney, Marvel, and Pixar films would be available on Disney+ from launch with a new “Exclusive Premiere” label, allowing fans to pay extra to watch them.
When the company launched its streaming service, it said it hoped to hit between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024. The company has now surpassed its highest expectations three years early and shows no signs of slowing down. A revised estimation now pits Disney+ as having between 230 and 260 million subscribers around the world by 2024, ahead of Netflix.
