Disney has confirmed its streaming service has hit 118 million paid subscribers around the world.

That figure comes just two years after its launch, adding 2.1 million subscribers in the last quarter and 44.4 million over the past 12 months. This time last year, Disney had 73.7 million subscribers, demonstrating it’s continued to grow and perform well around the world. Launching in November 2019, the company managed to secure an incredible 70 million paying subscribers within the first year, but many analysts were worried that the company wouldn’t be able to keep up with its growth and perhaps even see figures decrease as the COVID pandemic began to ease off.

Disney revealed it wanted to achieve between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024, and it’s already blown that out of the water.

Disney has revised its goal to 230 to 260 million subscribers by 2024, which seems ambitious. Should the company manage to achieve this goal, it will overtake Netflix and become the world’s biggest streaming giant. Right now, Netflix has 213.5 million subscribers.

Apple launched its own streaming service, Apple TV+, at the same time as Disney+, but it hasn’t seen anywhere near the level of growth or success. Apple has struggled to compete in the streaming market and still only offers consumers a very limited selection of television shows and movies. Some had predicted that Apple would buy rights to hit shows or even acquire a studio, but so far, this has yet to happen.
