Disney Streaming Service To Offer Entire Back Catalog of Movies

Disney Plus will launch with the company’s entire back catalog of movies, according to a new report.

In an attempt to compete with Apple’s upcoming streaming service, touted for a premiere on March 25, as well as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, Disney will include “the entire Disney motion picture library” in its streaming packages for the first time.

The ‘Disney Vault’ is the name for Disney’s entire back catalog of movies and content.

In order to protect titles and offer exclusivity/immediacy, Disney only allows for 38 of its titles to be released from the vault on DVD or streaming services at any one time.

Netflix, for example, may have rights to show 10 titles for a year, whilst other titles are sold to TV, streaming services, and made available for limited-edition DVD pressings.

Disney Plus will be the first time all of Disney’s titles will be available to stream at once, sparking a new direction for the company and signaling its desire to compete.

Speaking of the news, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger said that “at some point fairly soon after launch” Disney Plus will include the “entire” Disney motion picture library.

“The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television,” Igor added.

“At some point fairly soon after launch, it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a ‘vault’ and brought out basically every few years will be on the service.

“And then, of course, we’re producing a number of original movies and original television shows as well that will be Disney-branded.”

2019 in streaming: an exciting time

Whether you’re a huge fan of Disney movies or you’re more interest in fresh new television shows and movies, it’s hard to deny that 2019 is going to be an interesting year in the streaming industry.

With Apple and Disney introducing new services and Netflix and Amazon working hard to keep users subscribed, we’ll likely see a price and bidding war amongst top talent, which should hopefully increase the quality of content available on such platforms.
