Downloading and Streaming to Surpass DVDs in Revenue This Year

Video streaming services like Netflix will financially blossom even further at the expense of DVD retailers this year, judging from statistics in a report published yesterday by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The study predicts that, in 2015, revenue from downloading movies and streaming videos will rise to $9.5 billion, while spending on DVDs will fall to $7.8 billion.

These statistics are eye-opening as they mean that, for the first time ever, money made from the downloading and streaming services will be higher than that made from offering physical DVDs for purchase and rental. However, people following the fortunes of video streaming service Netflix are unlikely to be so surprised. That company experienced a revenue increase of 24% in the most recent quarter, and its number of worldwide subscribers now tops 60 million.

Regular visitors to the Apple Magazine website are also likely to be less surprised by the news – as, just last month, we reported on Netflix’s impressive increase in subscribers in Australia, a mere few weeks after the company had launched a dedicated streaming service in that country.
