Dyson Announces OnTrac Headphones

A person with short, blond hair wears a serious expression, looking directly at the camera. They have black and pink headphones around their neck and are dressed in a blue and purple animal print jacket. The background is plain and light-colored, resembling the simplicity of a Dyson ad.

The OnTrac headphones mark a significant departure from Dyson’s previous attempt, the Dyson Zone, which combined noise-canceling headphones with an air purifying mask. The new OnTrac model adopts a modular design, allowing users to replace ear cushions and outer caps, offering over 2,000 possible color combinations. This level of customization lets users personalize their headphones to match their style.

Advanced Active Noise Cancellation

One of the standout features of the OnTrac is its active noise cancellation (ANC). Dyson utilizes an eight-microphone system that samples external noise 384,000 times per second, aiming to deliver industry-leading noise cancellation. This system is designed to block up to 40 decibels of noise, enhancing the listening experience in noisy environments. While Apple’s AirPods Max also feature multiple microphones for ANC, Dyson’s OnTrac promises a potentially superior performance, although the exact comparison metrics for the AirPods Max are not specified.

Exceptional Battery Life

The OnTrac headphones boast an impressive 55 hours of continuous listening on a single charge with ANC enabled, far surpassing the 20 hours offered by the AirPods Max with both ANC and spatial audio enabled. Dyson achieves this by incorporating two high-capacity lithium-ion cells into the headband, which also ensures even weight distribution for comfort. The headphones charge via a USB-C port, and a 10-minute quick charge provides up to 2.5 hours of playback.

Superior Sound Quality

Equipped with 40mm drivers, the OnTrac headphones reproduce frequencies from as low as 6Hz to as high as 21kHz, promising deep bass and clear highs. The drivers are angled towards the ears for a more direct audio delivery. In comparison, the AirPods Max features custom-built 40mm dynamic drivers supporting a frequency range from 20Hz to 20kHz. The OnTrac’s extended frequency range could potentially offer more detailed audio, especially in low-end frequencies.

Unique Controls and Customization

The OnTrac headphones feature a joystick for playback control and touch-sensitive ear cups for toggling ANC. Users can further customize their audio experience through the MyDyson app, which allows monitoring of noise exposure levels and EQ adjustments with presets like Bass Boost, Enhanced, and Natural.

Extensive Customization Options

At launch, the OnTrac headphones are available in four main colorways: CNC Aluminum with bright yellow ear cushions, CNC Copper with a purple headband and copper ear cups, Ceramic Cinnabar with a light red headband and matte ear cups, and CNC Black Nickel with an all-black design. Users can also purchase additional customization options separately, allowing for a deeply personalized look.

Availability

The Dyson OnTrac headphones will be available on Dyson’s website starting August 1. With their extensive battery life, advanced noise cancellation, and high level of customization, the OnTrac headphones set a new benchmark in the premium headphone market. Whether you’re an audiophile or a casual listener, Dyson’s latest offering promises an unparalleled listening experience.
