Apple has turned on its Emergency SOS via Satellite feature in the United States and Canada.
The new feature, exclusive to the iPhone 14 range, allows users to reach out to emergency services via text through satellite connectivity. Should a user find themselves in a situation without WiFi and cellular service, Emergency SOS via Satellite will appear when they try to call the emergency services.
Apple has created several questions to reduce back and forth and ensure the correct information is collected. Apple will then send your answers, location, battery life, altitude, Medical ID and more to the emergency services. The service can also be used to share your location via Find My when you’re off the grid, ideal if you’re worried about getting lost or going missing and want to let friends know.
The company has added a dedicated demo mode, and users can head to Settings > Emergency SOS > Emergency SOS via Satellite > Try Demo to see it for themselves. In this instance, users can experience the service without alerting the emergency services and can offer reassurance.
Users with an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max can access the feature in the United States and Canada right now, and support for France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK is expected to follow in December.
