The upcoming iteration of the Mac Pro seems promising with the introduction of the M4 chip family, featuring at least three variants according to Bloomberg. The reported codenames include the entry-level Donan, the mid-range Brava, and the high-end Hidra.
Expected to launch in late 2025, the new Mac Pro will likely incorporate the Hidra chip or a similar advanced model. It does not seem that Apple is considering the M3 chips for this model at all.
Additionally, there could reportedly be a significant enhancement in the Mac Pro’s RAM capacity, potentially supporting up to 512GB of Unified Memory — an increase from the current 192GB limit, yet still below the previous Intel-based Mac Pro’s 1.5TB capability.
The Mac Pro, last updated in June 2023 with the M2 Ultra processor, has always had a dedicated but smaller customer base, which has been vocal about the need for more robust capabilities. Apple appears to be responding with these planned upgrades.
Turning to the Mac Studio, the situation appears less clear. The last update in June 2023 offered configurations with either the M2 Max or M2 Ultra processors.
Currently, Apple is said to be experimenting with two versions of the Mac Studio: one using an unreleased M3-era chip and another with a variation of the M4 Brava processor.
The company’s final decision on whether to launch a new model with an M3-era chip remains uncertain, but a Mac Studio featuring the M4 chip could be expected around mid-2025.
