ExxonMobil has updated its Speedpass+ app to let customers pay for gas or car washes through Apple Pay on their iPhone. This payment option is being rolled out to over 6,000 ExxonMobil stations today, while all 10,000 locations across the United States will be covered by 2016’s end.
To pay for gas at ExxonMobil stations through use of Apple Pay, the iPhone user needs to first allow the free Speedpass+ app to use GPS to discern which station the user is at. Then, the user can specify which pump they are using before confirming the purchase through Touch ID.
Once payment has been made, the user has “about 45 seconds”, according to CNET, to begin pumping gas. Otherwise, the app will time out and the process will have to be restarted from the beginning. Purchase history can also be tracked through the app.
The Speedpass+ app on Android devices currently does not accept either Android Pay or Samsung Pay, the two most obvious rivals to Apple Pay. Bryant Russell, Americas program manager for mobile payment and loyalty at ExxonMobil, told CNET that his corporation is currently focused on Apple Pay as “it has such great adoption.”
