Apple is reportedly working on new technology to improve its Face ID service.
The company wants to make it easier for Face ID to activate when users are wearing a mask, and when they’re wearing glasses that have steamed up, combating common pain points in the service.
According to Jon Prosser, the Cupertino company has begun testing an advanced version of Face ID that uses case that fits around the iPhone 12, bypassing the built-in Face ID system. This prototype is reportedly an exact match of the CAD files of the iPhone 13 which leaked earlier in the year, and suggest the company is testing the new Face ID technology ahead of its release.
Apple has reportedly been running tests to conduct as much information as possible on the new Face ID system to improve performance and usability, without having to distribute the new iPhone.
Users who have been testing the new Face ID have been asked to wear face masks, glasses, and test the device in different locations to determine its effectiveness. The hardware is reportedly able to allow users to unlock their iPhones whilst wearing foggy glasses or a face mask, and without needing an Apple Watch.
However, as these tests were conducted recently, there’s no guarantee they’ll make it into the 2021 iPhone. Apple could instead issue the change as part of a software update on a future iOS release, or hold off on releasing the technology until next year’s iPhone 14.
