Facebook has seen its app downloads fall by more than 30% following the rise of alternative social networking sites like TikTok, as well as concerns over privacy and misinformation.
The news comes off the back of iOS 14.5, which now prompts users to decide whether or not they want advertising giants like Facebook to track them as they travel around the web.
Facebook has faced significant criticism over the way it handled the move, and once again shone the spotlight on the company’s less-than-stellar reputation for privacy and data use.
Now, new data from AppFigures suggests that Facebook has lost around 30% of downloads on both the App Store and Google Play Store when compared to 2020. Last year, the app averaged around 15 million downloads per week, and now, the figure is closer to 11 million.
It’s important to note that this is not the first time that Facebook has suffered a slope in user downloads. However, it is the first time that downloads have continued to drop for more than a year and suggests that the rise of apps like TikTok, which continues to break App Store records, are taking away from Facebook’s dominance as consumer habits continue to change.
