Facebook Messenger Updated with In-App 3D Touch Gestures

Facebook Messenger, already a great messaging app on iOS, can now provide an even more streamlined experience on iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. This is because users of those devices can now use the pressure-sensitive 3D Touch interface to speedily preview in-app content.

Within a conversation thread, the Peek and Pop element of 3D Touch lets users quickly peek into any links or contacts included in a message, reports MacRumors. In the release notes for the update, which brings the app to version 79.0, Facebook says that, in the same way, users can also preview conversations, photos, videos, stickers and locations.

Nonetheless, it turns out that you can’t sneakily check new messages without the other person finding out; The Verge says that a read receipt will still appear on their screen even if you only peek into the conversation without ever fully popping it. Unlucky for the budding Solid Snakes among us…

Facebook Messenger is free for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch from the App Store – though the new 3D Touch features, at least until this fall’s new iPhones arrive, will only work on the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.
