Facebook has revealed more about its impending first data center in Ireland, and second in Europe – a facility that will be “one of the most advanced, efficient and sustainable data centers in the world”.
The new details were revealed by Tom Furlong, Facebook’s VP of Infrastructure, who said in a press release that the center “will become part of the infrastructure that enables billions of people to connect with the people and things they care about on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and more.”
Furthermore, it will not only boast “cutting-edge technology”, but also enhance the social media site’s green credentials. All of the building’s components have been made from scratch as part of the Open Compute Project, a group of tech firms dedicated to open sourcing energy-efficient infrastructure solutions.
The facility, to be sited in the village of Clonee near the Republic of Ireland’s capital Dublin, will use the country’s “robust wind resources” to power itself with 100% renewable energy. Facebook’s ultimate intent is to convert 50% of its infrastructure to clean and renewable power by the close of 2018.
