The FBI says that it ‘knows’ North Korea were behind the recent cyber-attack on Sony Pictures because the country ‘got sloppy’. Its director James Comey said material was posted from a server that is only used by North Korea.
The cyber-attack, which took place in November last year, led to a series of forthcoming films being leaked, scripts appearing online illegally and other sensitive information being led public. It ultimately led to the film The Interview – a satirical film about two journalists being asked to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un – being released online after various cinema chains refused to screen it due to security worries.
Nonetheless, several security experts have doubted that North Korea was behind the attack. The country itself denied responsibility, although it did describe the attack as a “righteous deed”. The US has placed sanctions on a number of North Korean companies and individuals in retaliation. Speaking in New York at the International Conference on Cyber Security, Mr. Comey said that the hackers failed to use proxy servers during the entirety of the cyber-attack.
Security researcher Brian Honan doubted Mr. Comey’s claims, saying that IP addresses in Taiwan and Japan had been linked to the attack.
