Game of Thrones season 7 is here….almost!

Last night, HBO announced the release date for season 7 of Game of Thrones in a very unique way. During a Facebook Live event, they built up the hype (albeit very slowly) by making fans watch an entire block of ice melt which concealed the date. Yes, GoT fans came by the tens of thousands to actually watch a block of ice melt.

As the ice melted, viewers were encouraged to type in ‘FIRE’ to summon a flamethrower to melt it quicker and at one point, Bran himself appeared to cheer viewers on. He then breathed fire…….could this hint to a possible plot storyline? Could Bran’s powers of mind control allow him to take charge of the dragons currently locked up in the dungeons? This is only one possibility.

For the first 15 minutes or so, everything seemed to be going well then the feed then cut because of unknown technical difficulties. When the feed returned, the release date was FINALLY free from it’s ice tomb for everyone to see: July 16th. Put it in your diaries, be prepared, book the next day off work if you have to because it’s going to be a big one.

The show entered its final stretch in the last season, Daenerys is on her way to Westeros with an impressive fleet of ships, Cersei’s on the Iron Throne, Arya is still avenging her family one confusing episode at a time and Jon Snow has been crowned King of the North. Let’s not forget that Tyrion is set to unleash the dragons, the White Walkers are here and the Great War is about to begin. There’s a lot happening but, unless you want to spend time agonizing over ‘what it all means’, the teaser trailer doesn’t give us any direct clues about the fate of any of our characters. Although, if the past six seasons are anything to go by, we can assume that at least 70% of them won’t make it to season 8.

The upcoming season will have only 7 episodes instead of the usual 10 that we’re used to and the show’s creator David Benioff mentioned last year that the show only has about 15 episodes left in it. It’s nearly all over, and what are we going to do with ourselves then?
