GAME REVIEW: Cartoon Survivor (iOS)

Remember when we told you about the impending release of the eccentric cartoon adventure game, Cartoon Survivor, late last month? That game is now available to freely download from the iOS App Store, so we decided to give it a whirl and see if our eager anticipation was warranted.

It’s easy to think, from watching the gameplay trailer in our preview of Cartoon Survivor, that it must be a lot of fun to play – and, indeed, actually playing the game does feel like being plonked right into the daft universe of Looney Tunes. We aren’t just talking about the visuals here, lovably wacky though they are – the game’s opening cut-scene and sound effects also add to the manic feel.

The control system, which we detailed in our preview, is wonderfully intuitive and relatively easy to get used to. Furthermore, the difficulty curve is easily manageable; there are so many levels and little side-goals that, whenever you do become frustrated, you can often easily put that problematic task to one side and look for another, more forgiving one to tackle.

This can lead to Cartoon Survivor becoming quite addictive. We found particular satisfaction in continually looking for new little ways in which we could save time and keep more of the coins that we pick up. On the subject of coins, every time you have finished a level, you can opt to view a short advertisement to double the number of coins that you amassed in that level – another neat touch.

As a result of this addictiveness, the game can occasionally start feeling repetitive. However, it feels like Brisbane-based developer Spunge Games intended Cartoon Survivor very much for the occasional pick-up-and-play blast rather than lengthy, sustained periods of gaming. For busy iOS device users, this game can provide exactly that.
