Meet the Team: Glauco Ribeiro

In a new series, we’re going behind the scenes at AppleMagazine and introducing you to the senior members of our team. This week, we’re getting to know Glauco Ribeiro, the Art and Design Director of AppleMagazine.

Can you tell us about your work?

I’m in charge of managing our design team, from our conceptual designs to the approval of every page of our magazine. I’m passionate about delivering the very best user experience, so both my designers and I put everything we have into our graphic design projects.

How the magazine is made, and what does the weekly routine look like?

Managing the design of AppleMagazine can be hard work. Every week, we’ve got to put a new issue together from scratch, and it’s demanding in terms of design and creativity. Of course, while the rest of the team is focused on producing and providing the very best content to our readers, my team is responsible for finding the best way to display all of that information and make our magazine look eye-catching and attractive every week.

With a weekly magazine to produce, we have to manage our time very carefully. It’s just not possible for us to spend a whole day deciding on the color scheme for a quotation mark, or choosing which font works best for a new feature. We have to do our very best design work in the shortest possible time, and we may attention to detail to as many aspects as we can.

For six years, now, I’ve been attempting to highlight the intersection between art, design, and technology. I think we’re doing a really great job so far.

What project are you most proud of in your career?

Throughout my career, I’ve worked at design studios, advertising agencies and freelancing, working on a whole array of projects like branding, print media and the web. Despite that, I truly think that the best design project I have worked on is with AppleMagazine. I get to take advantage of technological breakthroughs and produce a magazine that trumps everything else out there – and that’s a great feeling!

How do you envisage the next five years for AppleMagazine?

First of all, I want us to grow our audience even further. We’re reaching more people than we ever have with both our weekly magazine and our newly-designed website, and I want to grow on the success we’ve had to ensure we’re always the number one technology news source for our readers. I also want to help to expand our range of products, with app development something I’m very interested in.

How do you balance your personal life and your work?

It hasn’t always been easy to find the line between my home life and my professional life, but I think that I’ve managed to balance it! At the beginning of our AppleMagazine journey, people dropped out of the project, and so I had to deal with some setbacks to compensate that. Back then it was really tough to keep the magazine running week after week, but we managed to figure out a solution. Nowadays, I have more time to share between my work and my private life, and I think it’s really important to spend time with your family, practice hobbies and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Oh, and when I’m not working, I’m still playing with my favorite Apple devices, so I never get a real escape!

That’s all we’ve got time for in this week’s Meet the Team. Check back next week when we chat to another member of the AppleMagazine team.
