Google have removed their controversial Glass eyewear from sale – but are saying that they haven’t abandoned it completely. They have announced that they are to cease producing Glass in its present form. The tech giant says that it is shifting its focus to “future versions of Glass”, with work becoming undertaken by a different team than before.
The Explorer program – which allowed software developers to buy Glass for $1,500 – is to end. Google says that it will continue to support companies currently using Glass. The company have not said when a new version of Glass can be expected.
The wearable technology allowed users to find information via a small screen, take photos and videos and obtain direction. Many users said that the technology was not proving to be as useful as they thought it would be, and concerns about safety and privacy were raised. Many bars and restaurants prevented their guests from wearing the glasses and some called the device ‘invasive’. Others claimed that the technology made its users look ridiculous.
It’s though that Google’s decision will anger Explorers who had paid significant sums of money for Glass, believing that they had invested in something more useful.
