Earlier this week, a Google Doodle reminded the search engine’s users of Hedy Lamarr, the 1940s actress and inventor. In a new interview, the woman behind the doodle, Jennifer Hom, has spoke further about her enthusiasm in making Lamarr a Google front page star.
Hom said of Lamarr to CNBC: “This woman was a trailblazer, almost a superhero character – actress by day, inventor by evening. She busted all female stereotypes out of the water, and created early prototypes for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellite and GPS technology.”
Though an actress of great renown, her interest in technological tinkering also led her to co-develop a “frequency hopping” system that assisted the Allies in World War II. Hom recalled that she was “thrilled” when Google gave the go ahead for a commemorative Google Doodle about Lamarr.
Google Doodles have become a staple of the tech giant’s search site over the last fifteen years – and, as further made clear by Hom in the interview, a lot of thought and work goes into producing them. For artistic types especially, the full interview makes a fascinating and enlightening read.
