Google Introduces Pre-Registration for Future Android Apps

In a move likely to further distance Google Play from comparisons to Apple’s App Store, Google has introduced a new feature that enables users of Android devices to pre-register for upcoming apps that will be available through Google Play. The first app using this feature is Terminator Genisys: Revolution, a game made by Glu Mobile to tie in with the next film in the Terminator franchise.

How precisely does this feature work? Basically, an upcoming app will appear listed in Google Play, except with a pre-register icon where the ‘download’ link would usually be. Android device users can free-of-charge indicate their interest in the app by clicking this icon; however, they do not need to download or purchase the app as it becomes available. Instead, they will simply be alerted as the app becomes live and they can then decide whether to proceed from there.

The pre-registration feature seems ideal for Terminator Genisys: Revolution, as it will be released alongside the film, but could be too easily overlooked by Android users eager to see the movie first.
