A new Google Pixel Watch concept shows off what a future circular Apple Watch could look like.
Designed by the talented James Tsai, the new Made By Google-inspired device looks strikingly similar to an Apple Watch – expect it sports a rounded screen rather than square.
Tsai’s concept features an always-on screen, with Google Assistant at the front and centre of the device. WearOS apps like Google Maps, Uber, and Google Fit form part of the software.
Speaking of the concept, Tsai said: “The Pixel Watch features a circular display with a soft-touch area creating a smooth tactile finish. The matte glass screen can always match the wrist band’s color when Always-On mode is on. The variety of matte and glossy materials adds a creamy and sleek feel to the smartwatch experience.”
Google has been reportedly considering launching its own smartwatch for a number of years and the first was set to be announced back in 2018.
According to insiders, Google’s Director of Engineering for WearOS paused the launch, but it’s reported that development is back on.
Google is currently in the process of acquiring Fitbit, and now it seems that the two firms will merge together and offer a WearOS-powered smartwatch to compete with the likes of Apple.
According to some, Google has placed a “large order” for body movement tracking sensors from Samsung, so a Google-branded smartwatch could indeed be around the corner.
Though Apple Watch is the world’s most powerful and successful smartwatch brand, many prefer a circular watch face as it looks more traditional. There have been rumors that Apple has been working on a circular alternative to its square-shaped screen, but that’s yet to come to fruition.
