Google is reportedly planning to launch its own branded debit card, according to new leaks.
In leaks first shown to TechCrunch, Google has been working on its own debit card, working with banks across the United States to elevate the consumer banking experience and help to compete against new challenger fintech banks and indeed products such as Apple Card.
Google would offer a virtual and physical debit card that users could use when making purchases online or in retail stores, and they’ll be able to add or remove funds from their card by connecting it to a bank account, offering an additional layer of security over standard debit cards and giving consumers more choice about how and where they spend their cash.
The card would also feature high-end security features such as fingerprint recognition or Google Face Unlock, as well as a PIN number.
What’s more, users would be able to access a virtual credit card number and CVC code so they can make online and in-app purchases with ease, without worrying about their details being hacked.
Though Google won’t directly compete with Apple Card, the company’s technology would share some similarities with the service. A better comparison would be Apple’s Cash Card, allowing users to link bank accounts to a debit card to send, receive, and purchase goods.
We don’t know any specifics on when Google is planning to launch its new card, but with the COVID-19 pandemic causing challenges in virtually every industry, plans for an imminent rollout will no doubt be on hold until consumer confidence rebounds and markets recover.
