Google Street View Now Allows Exploration of Mount Etna

Two years ago, Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, became an UNESCO World Heritage Site – and, to mark the anniversary, Google has just added views of the volcanic site to Street View. Users of Street View can now see stunning sights, from Crater Silvestri and Crater Silvani, of this almost constantly active volcano located on Sicily’s east coast.

Capturing volcanic sites is nothing new for Street View, which already includes views of such sites in Hawaii, Japan, Oregon and Arizona. However, Google has served up some special treats for the Mount Etna anniversary – including an online exhibition with intriguing details of the volcano’s history.

This exhibition has been put together by the Google Cultural Institute working alongside Unioncamere and the Chamber of Commerce of Catania, and also educates about how Mount Etna has influenced the surrounding area’s art and culture. This news is likely to make many people who were interested in visiting Sicily to see the volcano – ahem – erupt in excitement.
