Google will allow developers to accept payments from third parties, it has revealed.
The Council of the European Union has approved the Digital Markets Act, and Google has responded by announcing plans to support third-party payments for the first time.
The company will soon allow developers in the European Economic Area, which covers the European Union as well as countries like Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland choose an alternative to Google Play Store payments, effectively allowing them to bypass the usual 15-30% fee for processing payments.
Google will still take a cut – its commission will fall to 3%, which Google says will support its investment in Google Play and Android. The company says that its alternative billing system program will be available to developers of gaming apps ahead of the Digital Markets Act’s date.
The news only affects customers in the European Union and not in other territories like the United States.
