Google has announced that, from April 2016, its Chrome web browser will no longer receive updates on OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8, as Apple no longer actively supports these platforms.
In a post on the Google Chrome Blog, the company has noted that these OS X versions, released respectively in 2009, 2011 and 2012 as Snow Leopard, Lion and Snow Lion, are – along with Windows XP and Windows Vista – “no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple”. Google has therefore opted to stop issuing them with Chrome updates and security fixes from April.
As Mac users benefit from free OS X updates and so rarely use anything older than the most recent version, Google’s notice is unlikely to be relevant for many of these users. For the few exceptions, a move to the new OS X El Capitan is encouraged, not least for security reasons.
