Here’s a huge list of the new emojis to expect this year

In November, Unicode gave us a brief look at some of the emojis set to be released as part of Unicode 10 this year. Now, the full list of 69 new emojis coming with the June Unicode update has been released, although it’s not likely to come to iOS until later.

The high and mighty Unicode Consortium ultimately decides which emoji are created, and the organisation have updated it’s shortlist for 2017. The forthcoming update is a mixed bag, including a mermaid, a T-Rex, a vampire, a “shocked face with exploding head” and a “face with open mouth vomiting” as well as many others.

The full list of emoji is said to be “accepted for encoding in Unicode 10.0” and it is to include male and female versions of most emoji, a number of which will have different skin tones, too. The appearance of the emoji may change before they come to our smartphones as they still need approval from the “Emoji Subcommittee.”

Food updates said to be included are a broccoli, pie, pretzel, coconut and sandwich and we may see animals such as a hedgehog, zebra face and a giraffe face. The biggest category to be updated, however, is people. For the first time, there is said to be a person with a Hijab, once again establishing more much-needed diversification of the emoji. Elsewhere in the list we see a “bearded person”, an “older person” and even male and female genies.

Once the Unicode 10 update is released in June, mobile phone operators, websites and apps will be able to implement it into their devices but considering that the last iOS 10 has only just released the emoji from Unicode 9.0, we don’t know when we can expect to be able to use them…  *serious face with symbols covering mouth*
