He said he’d be back, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has kept his word, having donned the familiar black leather jacket again for new movie Terminator Genisys. This is only the fourth Terminator film that Arnie has starred in since the franchise began way back in 1984 – and it turns out that, for big fans of that movie, Terminator Genisys offers a genuine feast of nostalgia.
Terminator Genisys, which is available to see in US theaters from today, quite literally revisits the story of that culturally earth-shaking first movie. There’s a strong sense of déjà vu with the opening scenes, as John Connor, leading the human Resistance battling against the machines in 2029, sends a soldier, Kyle Reese, back in time to 1984 to prevent a T-800 machine killing his mother, Sarah Connor. It’s then that the story becomes much less familiar. Retroactive continuity, here we come…
Despite not having been heavily involved with production of Terminator Genisys, the director of the classic first two films, James Cameron, has given the new movie a resounding thumbs up. After seeing it at a pre-release screening, he said, in contrast to his criticisms of Terminator 3 and Terminator Salvation, that he considers Genisys the true third film in the series, concluding: “If you like the Terminator films, you’re going to love this movie.”
We look even closer – in fact, much closer – at Terminator Genisys in the next issue of AppleMagazine, which will be released tomorrow. You can have it sent to your iOS device if you subscribe now.
