Apple will pay $50 million to those affected by a controversial keyboard design – so how do you get your refund?
The company confirmed on Tuesday that it would pay out $50 million to those affected by the use of the butterfly keyboards across the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro lineup on devices that were sold between 2015 and 2019.
In order to be eligible for a payment, you’ll need to have purchased your device within one of the following seven states: California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Washington. It’s worth checking your invoice to ensure you purchased your device in one of those states or had your device shipped from Apple.com or a retailer to an address in those states.
Customers who were impacted will receive up to $395 – for most users, a $125 refund will be offered if one keyboard was replaced, and $50 will be offered if key caps were replaced. Girard Sharp LLP and Chimicles Schwartz Kriner and Donaldson-Smith LLP will take $15 of the $50 million settlement to cover their fees, with the reminder available for the general public.
It’s expected that Apple will launch a new refund section on its Apple Support website soon, where eligible users will be able to enter their model’s serial number to confirm their refund amount. Apple will then ask for bank details and the refund will be granted. It might also be possible to request a refund from Apple Support over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get them.
