Apple showed off iOS 9 for the first time at its Worldwide Developers Conference this week, and it’s fair to say that many people liked what they learnt about this new version of iOS. We already have a good idea of how it will run on new mobile devices that Apple launch later this year, but what about older devices? We have done a bit of investigating…
Firstly, we should mention that iOS 9 will be available for all the same devices that iOS 8 is available for – so, all current iPads from the iPad 2 and later; all current iPad Minis; all current iPhones from the iPhone 4S and later; and the fifth generation iPod Touch.
Still, you should be wary of downloading iOS 9 just because you will be able to do so when it launches in September. Older devices, especially those first released several years ago, can become noticeably more slow and sluggish after receiving iOS updates. However, iOS 9 will take up much less space on the hard drive than iOS 8, and can also use ‘app thinning’ to reduce app sizes. This suggests that iOS 9 could even boost the efficiency with which many older devices can operate.
