Instagram Now Lets Users Buy Products Without Leaving Platform

Three screenshots from the Instagram app show a pink-toned eye shadow palette being marketed. The first screen displays an Instagram post from "colourpopcosmetics," the second screen is a product purchase page for the palette, and the third screen shows the checkout page, highlighting Instagram shopping's seamless experience to buy products without leaving the platform.

Instagram has announced Checkout on Instagram, a new feature that allows users to purchase goods and services from their news feed, without leaving the Instagram app.

ā€œWhen you find a product you love,ā€ Instagram said in a press release, ā€œyou can now buy it without leaving the app.ā€

Users are now able to tap to view a product from a brandā€™s post and may see a ā€˜Checkout on Instagramā€™ button, where they can tap to select their size and color option, and then purchase the product for home delivery without setting foot on the brandā€™s e-commerce site.

You will need to enter a name, email address, billing information, shipping address and a credit card (unless youā€™re using Apple Pay), and your information will be ā€œsecurely saved for convenience the next time you shopā€.

Instagram adds that youā€™ll be able to receive notifications about your order from inside of the Instagram app and make changes to your order (like canceling or returning items) without visiting the retailerā€™s website.

As Facebook works hard to fight back against criticism from the worldā€™s media and politicians the company is naturally looking for new areas to boost revenue and increase engagement.

Checkout is the latest attempt to increase revenue, and will no doubt be rolled out to brands worldwide in the coming months as consumers look to purchase goods on the social network.

There are a select number of brands currently signed up to operate under Checkout, although this number is likely to grow as adoption increases and businesses look to find new ways to sell more of their goods, particularly in the food, fashion, health, and beauty industries, for which Instagram is synonymous.
