‘Internet of Things’ Demands Collaboration, Says Samsung

Tech giant Samsung says that any attempt to create an “internet of things” will not be successful unless more collaboration between electronics companies takes place. The company says that gadgets and appliances made by different manufacturers need to be able to share data with ease if the IoT is to be successful.

Samsung claims that all the hardware it sells will be IoT enabled within five years. Boo Keun Yoon, Samsung’s chief executive, said “The internet of things has the potential to transform our society, economy and how we live our lives”. Speaking at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, he said that sensors were becoming more and more accurate all the time.

“It is our job to pull together – as an industry, and across different sectors – to make true on the promise of the internet of things,” he said. The IoT will allow devices such as fridges and washing machines to report data and be controlled from remote settings. A number of leading hardware manufacturers are building appliances that owners will be able to control with tablets and smartphones. They are also looking for ways to help users control older devices through smart switches.

Do you think the IoT can be a success? Maybe you think it’s a step too far that will ultimately make people lazier? Tell us your thoughts below.
