With iOS 10 now having been available in beta form for a few days, numerous developers have had time to thoroughly test it. One surprising revelation is that, at the moment, iOS 10 seems able to increase the amount of available storage space in iPhones and iPads – though results have varied between models…
One tester has started a thread on Reddit claiming that, while their 128GB iPhone 6S on iOS 9.3.2 indicates, in Settings, a capacity of 113GB and available storage space of 70GB, on a 128GB iPhone 6 running iOS 10, those figures are, respectively, 121.83GB and 80.51GB. This is despite both handsets sharing the same numbers of videos, photos and apps.
Rises in storage have also been reported on the 64GB iPhone 6S Plus and 128GB iPad Pro; however, it looks like users of 16GB iGadgets shouldn’t hold out too much hope. One user of a 16GB iOS device claimed that, with iOS 10, their available storage saw a modest increase of 12.6GB to 13.12GB.
While it’s possible that Apple has managed to further trim the amount of space that iOS takes up without sacrificing its smooth operation, iOS 10 remains in a very early beta phase – and so, with extra little tweaks and refinements in the run-up to its public launch in September, those promising rises in indicated storage levels could yet significantly fall back.
In any case, however, we reckon that there remain lots of reasons to be optimistic about iOS 10 – you can subscribe to AppleMagazine and download a copy of our new issue to find out why.
