Apple is reportedly working on a new feature for its upcoming iOS 14 operating system that would allow users to view and interact with content from third-party applications without having to download or install them on their devices, according to leaked code from 9to5Mac.
Similar to Android’s Slices feature, code suggests that Apple has worked on a feature called Clips, in which users could scan a QR code and have content and functionality from an app appear as a floating card on the screen, with a download button to access more functionality.
Google’s feature allows developers to offer users dynamic and interactive content from the Google Search app, without having to download an app or open a piece of software.
The idea is that users can perform tasks faster and increase brand engagement outside of the usual app experience, giving developers new ways to connect with their customers.
Apple is reportedly working with brands like DoorDash, YouTube, and Yelp to beta test the new feature, and if it proves successful, we’ll likely hear more about it at WWDC 2020.
The new virtual WWDC experience is due to kick off in June, with Apple set to unveil iOS 14, updates to macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, and perhaps even some new hardware.
