Almost 30% of all iPhone users have upgraded to iOS 14 in the first five days since launch.
Last Wednesday (September 16), Apple premiered iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, an operating system update that introdiuces exciting new features such as home screen widgets, support for picture-in-picture video playback, and App Clips. As a result of the changes, close to 30% of iOS users have upgraded to the latest version in just five days – up from 20% in a week last year.
One of the biggest reasons for users upgrading to iOS 14 is the introduction of home screen widgets, which allow for more customisation than previous iOS releases.
Twitter is awash with consumers experimenting with new widgets to make their iOS home screens look as far removed from iOS as possible, inspired by Android, iOS 6, and artworks from famous artists.

Another new feature is picture-in-picture support, which allows users to watch videos from social networks, YouTube, Apple TV, and the internet whilst they browse content on other apps. Because of these new changes, it’s likely that iOS 14 has been seen as more attractive than previous operating system updates, prompting users to consider upgrading.
According to data from Mixpanel, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 adoption is now at 27% – just five days after launching around the world. Comparatively, last year’s iOS 13 update hit a 20% adoption rate within its first week, and iOS 12 was even slower than that.
Apple typically releases official uptake data when it hits 50%, and it could be that this comes before the next iPhone release in October. Analysts predict 2020’s release uptake will break records, fueled by new features, the lack of new iPhones and the COVID-19 pandemic.
