iOS 14 installed on almost half of all devices within just five weeks

A collage of various features in Apple's iOS 14, including the Translate app, App Clips, Maps guides, Car keys, App Library, Picture in Picture mode, Weather updates, On-device dictation, EV routing in Maps, Widgets customization, and Cycling directions. Meanwhile,iOS 14 tracking changes leave some advertisers unhappy.

iOS 14 is close to overtaking iOS 13 as the most installed version of the iOS operating system within just five weeks of launch, according to insights from data firm Mixpanel.

Although Apple is yet to share the extract installation numbers for the release, Mixpanel has been tracking adoption for the new operating system since launch, and its numbers suggest that iOS 14 is now installed on almost half of all iOS devices, around the same number as those still running iOS 13.

A smaller percentage still runs older operating system versions.

It’s likely that iOS 14 will overtake iOS 13 as the most installed version of iOS in the next day or two, demonstrating the huge power of iOS and Apple’s influence over its customer base.

Unlike Google and Android, Apple’s releases are typically blockbuster and offer genuine incentives for customers to upgrade, with this year being a particularly impressive release.

What’s important to note is that iOS 14 is about to hit the 50% target, but it will do so slower than iOS 13 did the year prior. There are a number of reasons why this may be, including customers holding onto older devices, holding off until the new iPhone 12 release, and people spending more time on their phones working from home, and not wanting to “rock the boat” and install a version of the operating system that could cause productivity issues.

iOS 14 launched in September to much fanfare, offering consumers an all-new home screen design, the introduction of widgets, and a bunch of new features like a Translate app and improvements to Siri and Messages.
