Apple’s iOS 14 will reportedly support the same devices as iOS 13.
The company will unveil the next-generation operating system for its iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, Apple Watches and Macs at WWDC this June, and ahead if its launch, a new report from iPhonesoft has suggested Apple will support the same devices in 2020 as it did in 2019, though iPadOS will be limited to newer tablets.
According to their report, Apple’s iOS 14 will support the iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and even the iPhone SE and seventh-generation iPod touch – the biggest group to date.
On top of that, iOS 14 will support all of Apple’s 2020 phones, with five devices rumored to be added to the list. Apple will launch the second-generation iPhone SE – called the iPhone 9 – in March, and then four new iPhones in September.
On the iPad, Apple is expected to drop support for the iPad mini 4 and the iPad Air 2. The devices supported in iOS 14 include the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 11-inch iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, seventh-generation iPad, sixth-generation iPad, fifth-generation iPad, fifth-generation iPad mini, and third-generation iPad Air. Older devices will be limited to iOS 12/iPadOS 13.
Perhaps the biggest reason why Apple will continue to support older machines is so it can ensure consumers can access its subscription services like Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.
What’s more, in today’s privacy-conscious times, Apple is naturally wanting to ensure all of its users have access to a safe, up-to-date operating system, preventing the likelihood of any security breaches on older machines.
