LG has announced plans to introduce AirPlay-enabled smart TVs in hotel rooms, beginning “later this spring”, with the feature expected to be available by mid-June. This initiative marks LG as the first manufacturer to support AirPlay streaming on new hotel TVs and some existing models through software updates.
The feature’s introduction was first unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2023, with IHG Hotels & Resorts set to be the inaugural chain to offer this convenience at select locations.
IHG encompasses numerous notable brands, including Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, and InterContinental, among others.
Despite being contacted for comment by MacRumors, other major hotel chains such as Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Wyndham, and more have not confirmed whether they will also adopt the feature.
This new AirPlay capability will allow guests to connect their Apple devices to the hotel’s TV through a unique QR code, facilitating the wireless streaming of videos, music, and photos.
The connection process also automatically links the device to the hotel’s Wi-Fi network, promising a hassle-free setup without the need for additional logins, passwords, or apps.
LG highlighted the simplicity and user-friendly nature of this feature, aiming to enhance the in-room entertainment experience for hotel guests.
This move comes as Google has already implemented a similar feature for hotel TVs through Chromecast, compatible with both iPhones and Android devices.
The rollout of AirPlay-enabled TVs in hotels is anticipated to be a gradual process, given the vast number of hotels across the U.S.
However, where implemented, it will significantly improve the ease and quality of streaming personal entertainment content in hotel rooms.
