Apple has been quite active in updating its range of iPhone apps and features with the release of iOS 17, and CarPlay is no exception. While the complete overhaul of CarPlay promised last year has not materialized, Apple has introduced a series of notable updates. Among these, iOS 17 brings the Apple Music SharePlay feature to CarPlay, designed to elevate in-car entertainment.
To access SharePlay, the car owner whose iPhone is connected to CarPlay needs an Apple Music subscription. However, passengers can join in the fun without requiring their own subscription. The Apple Music interface on CarPlay will provide a QR code, which passengers can scan to gain access to a collaborative playlist. Once connected, everyone in the vehicle can add their favorite tracks to the in-car Apple Music queue.
Looking forward, Apple gave a preview of its next-generation CarPlay technology during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 event, promising deeper integration with automobiles.
Although Apple did not delve into CarPlay advancements at WWDC 2023, it stated last year that cars equipped with this upgraded technology would arrive towards the end of 2023. Features to look forward to include multiple display support throughout the vehicle, including the instrument cluster. The system will offer integration with the speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and other vehicle metrics.
Additionally, Apple’s updated CarPlay will extend its functionality to include control over the vehicle’s climate settings. Users will be able to adjust temperature and manage other climate features via the CarPlay interface.
As we move closer to the 2023 launch of the revamped CarPlay experience, further updates and enhancements are expected in upcoming iOS 17 patches.
Several car brands, such as Lucid, Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, and Volvo, have already announced support for the next-generation CarPlay technology.
