The latest iOS 26.2 beta includes a notable update to AirDrop that lets iPhone users share files with individuals outside their contacts list using a time-limited code. According to a report from PhoneArena, the feature allows someone who isn’t in your contacts to send you files after you have generated and shared a one-time code. Access remains open for up to 30 days once the code is used.
Prior to this change, Apple’s AirDrop options included “Contacts Only” and “Everyone for 10 Minutes” in typical settings. The new one-time-code functionality effectively bridges convenience and security by enabling temporary contactless file sharing without permanently opening the device to every nearby Airdrop-enabled user.
One user-facing element of the update is found within Settings → General → AirDrop → Manage Known AirDrop Contacts, where users can now generate a code and share it with someone not in their contacts. Once the recipient uses the code, the device remains discoverable for 30 days for file reception from that person. After the period expires, discoverability is revoked automatically.
Apple’s Support documentation still lists the previous discovery modes and describes how AirDrop works between devices signed in with the same Apple ID and how switching modes affects visibility.
The update reflects Apple’s ongoing balance between ease of sharing and safeguarding privacy. While the new code-sharing method expands flexibility for tasks such as exchanging files with event attendees or collaborators, it also introduces a longer window during which a device may be accessible. Users will need to remain aware of the period during which sharing is allowed and revoke access if needed.
As of now, the feature is available only in the beta version of iOS 26.2 and no public release date has been confirmed by Apple. Users participating in the beta program can test the code-sharing option, but those not enrolled should expect the feature to arrive in a future official update.
