One of the apps receiving a major overhaul with the release of iOS 6, which launches with the iPhone 5, is the Maps App. The new app is taking major advantage of the new A6 chip and its power. You will be seeing a new vector-based engine that will provide crisp text and responsive tilt and zoom. When you see a destination, tap it to receive information, photos, and even Yelp reviews.
Now the days of wishing your iPhone had spoken turn-by-turn directions are gone. Maps provides a great GPS feature with a 3D view and real time traffic information. Your friend Siri is also attached to Maps. She will automatically launch the GPS feature if you ask her how to get to a certain destination. While using the GPS feature, you can ask her questions like “Where is the closest hamburger joint?” if you feel the need.
The coolest new feature in my opinion is the Flyover effect that is really using the A6 to its full capacity. When the rumors started popping up about this feature. I thought maybe it would be an iPad only add-on. To my surprise, we will be seeing the iPhone 5 flyover effect in all its glory. Whats the buzz all about? The Flyover Effect lets you, according to Apple, “see select major metro areas from the air with photo-realistic, interactive 3D views. Explore cities in high resolution as you zoom, pan, tilt, and rotate around the city and its landmarks.” There are announcements made every day of more and more cities being added to the feature.
