iOS 9 Now Running on 61% of Active Devices, Reports Apple

According to 9to5Mac, Apple has reported that 61% of iOS devices are using iOS 9. This is strong evidence that several initiatives by Apple to boost iOS 9 adoption are paying off.

Apple’s last publicizing of the iOS 9 usage rate came just a few days after the operating system was freely released in September, when it was said to have reached over 50% of devices, a staggering highly proportion. The new data chart also has usage of iOS 8 at 30% and earlier versions at 9%.

These figures are said to have been “measured by the App Store”, and therefore clearly account just for active, rather than abandoned or unused, iOS devices. However, these statistics remain impressive, and suggest that crucial changes for iOS 9, including significantly lower space requirements, have much eased the upgrading process for many iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users.

iOS 9 usage is also likely to have been boosted by the recent release of the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and iPad Mini 4, each of which have the operating system preinstalled. Factors that should encourage the rate to continue rising include word of mouth about iOS 9.1, which was released after these figures were recorded, and further sales of iOS 9-ready devices, including the upcoming iPad Pro.
