iOS Share of Worldwide Smartphone Market Grows Sharply in 2015

The IT research firm Gartner has just released various figures concerning the performance of the worldwide smartphone market – and they paint a rosy picture for Apple. To be more exact, they reveal that, in the first quarter of 2015, the percentage of sold smartphones running iOS was 17.9% – an impressive rise of 2.6% on the corresponding figure of last year’s first quarter.

This significant boost in Apple’s share of the global smartphone market seems to have been much encouraged by the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Cupertino company’s first “phablet”, last fall. Apple’s share was 12.7% in the third quarter of 2014, during which these iPhone models were first formally announced and towards the end of which the models first became available for purchase.

Overall, Apple made a worldwide profit of US$13.6 billion in 2015’s first quarter – and its iPhone sales significantly contributed to that total. Apple Magazine has already reported heavily on rumors about the next generation of iPhones, which look likely to launch in September.
