iPhone 11 most-shipped smartphone in first half of 2020

Several 2020 iPhones arranged in a fan-like display, showcasing different colors including green, black, red, lavender, white, and yellow. Each phone features dual rear cameras and the Apple logo. Under-display fingerprint scanners enhance these stylish devices set against a plain white background.

The iPhone 11 was the world’s most-shipped smartphone in the first half of the year.

According to new data from Omdia, Apple managed to outperform its nearest competitor by an incredible 26 million units, demonstrating the huge impact the iPhone 11 has made.

Omdia’s Smartphone Model Market Tracker has revealed that Apple shipped an incredible 37.7 million iPhone 11 handsets in the first half of the year, compared with last year’s most popular smartphone the iPhone XR, which shipped 26.9 million units in the same period.

Speaking of the news, Omdia said: “A key driver for the success of iPhone 11 is the lower starting price. iPhone 11 launched $50 cheaper than the previous iPhone XR while adding significant hardware improvements, like a dual-lens camera.

“iPhone XR did not feature such upgrades.”

The iPhone SE also made it into the top ten list, selling an estimated 8.7 million units, whilst the iPhone XR came in sixth place selling 8 million units.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 pro shipped 7.7 million and 6.7 million units respectively. This helped Apple score a 13% year-over-year increase in iPhone shipments due to the success of the iPhone 11 and SE.

Apple beat Samsung, who came in at second place with the Galaxy A51, which shipped 11.4 million units in the first half of the year. Other popular manufacturers include Xiaomi, who was in third and fourth place with the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro, shipping 11 million and 10.2 million units respectively.

It’s important to note that Ominda does not have direct insight into Apple’s supply chain, so it can only offer estimates as to actual sales. However, it does paint a picture as to how popular each device is, and it’s great to see that Apple has come out on top again.
