Apple won’t introduce an under-display sensor on the iPhone 13, contrary to some reports.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will not introduce Touch ID on the iPhone 13, despite some previous suggestions that the new model would sport both Touch ID and Face ID to boost security. Although the company has been testing Touch ID, it’s now a “long-term goal” rather than something for right now.
Speaking of the update, Gurman said: “While Apple had tested in-screen Touch ID for the next flagship iPhones, it won’t make the cut this year. I believe Apple is all-in on Face ID for its higher-end iPhones and its long-term goal is to implement Face ID in the display itself.”
For several years, Apple has been rumored to introduce in-screen Touch ID to its smartphones, but now it seems as though this will not be the case in the immediate future. Apple eventually wants to remove the notch from smartphones, too, and Gurman says that the company could integrate Face ID in-screen, whilst lower-end iPhones could keep the notch with Face ID incorporated there.
This year’s iPhone 13 is still shaping up to be a big release, with the company expected to reduce the size of the notch, introduce a 120Hz refresh rate display, and offer up to 1TB storage for the pro models. That’s on top of better camera sensors and a new A15 chip.
