Apple is revolutionizing the way we capture and relive memories by introducing Spatial Video recording to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, a feature available in the latest iOS 17.2 update.

This innovative technology utilizes both the Main and Ultra Wide cameras to create stereoscopic videos, offering a depth effect that simulates a 3D experience.

When the footage is viewed through the Apple Vision Pro headset, users are immersed in a vivid, three-dimensional world, enhancing the emotional impact of their videos.

Tech Radar’s Lance Ulanoff said of his experience with the feature: “With my model train videos, the 3D spatial video effect reminded me of the possibly apocryphal tale of early cinema audiences who, upon seeing a film of an oncoming train, ran screaming from the theater… my model train did look like it was about to ride right into my lap.

This immersive experience, while not quite placing the viewer inside the video, significantly heightens emotions and engagement.

Mark Spoonaur of Tom’s Guide envisions the technology inspiring more people to document their lives through videos, citing how current photo memories evoke emotions. He predicts: “The Apple Vision Pro will take that experience to the next level with spatial video, and I think it will actually encourage people to take more videos instead of just photos“.

Meanwhile, Josh Rubin from Cool Hunting highlighted the synergy between the audio and visual elements in the Vision Pro, noting how the audio in his recordings accurately complemented the spatial experience, enhancing the overall immersion.

While Apple has previously demonstrated Spatial Video to the press, the upcoming release of the Apple Vision Pro headset, slated for early 2024 with a price tag of $3,499, is eagerly anticipated.

Although no specific launch date is confirmed, rumors suggest a potential debut as early as January.
