Recent news from the Taipei Times has cited a research note from Yunata Securities analyst Jeff Pu that claims Apple is likely to launch a new iPhone model with a triple lens rear camera sometime next year.
At present, there have been no additional details to strengthen the report but a Chinese report from the Economic Daily News last month did suggest that the camera system will have a 6P lens design with up to 5x zoom and at least one 12-megapixel lens.
An addition of a third lens would enable 3x optical zoom on an iPhone for the first time ever, allowing users to magnify an image in the viewfinder by up to 3x without any blurry reduction. For comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X feature 2x optical zoom.
This means that a triple lens rear camera would likely be reserved for the highest-end models such as a third-generation iPhone X or iPhone X Plus – both that are presumed to be launching in September 2019.
There is already a device with a triple lens camera on the market right now – the Huawei P20 Pro that features a 40-megapixel lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. You can check out more features of that device here.
If you’re hoping that this change is something that may possibly come in 2018, consider previous comments from former KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who ruled out any significant changes occurring in the iPhone X’s current dual-lens rear camera system this year.
