Apple’s iPhone has been named the fastest-growing smartphone brand in China in Q2 2020.

According to data from Counterpoint Research, the Cupertino company managed to increase its market share thanks to the popularity of the iPhone 11, alongside the launch of the affordable second-generation iPhone SE, shipping around 7.4 million units in the period.

Those figures are up 32% year-over-year and compare to Huawei’s 36.6 units sold.

Earlier in the year, Apple’s outlook in China was bleak. At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in mainland China, Apple sold 62% fewer iPhones than the year prior, but it appears that growing consumer confidence, an increase in Chinese consumers working from home, and promotions have helped Apple to win over buyers and drive iPhone sales.

What’s even more interesting to note is that most Chinese smartphone brands saw sales declines during the period, with the overall market contracting 17%.

Apple has therefore managed to “defy the odds” and help Apple drive sales. It’s likely that several promotions in the country, coinciding with online shopping events, saw Apple sell stock below retail price.
