The successor to the iPhone XR will reportedly feature a larger battery pack.
The XR already includes the longest battery life of any iPhone, ahead of the more expensive iPhone XS and XS Max, but it now appears 2019’s model will see battery life further increase.
According to Korean website The Elec, the iPhone XR 2 will come packaged with a 3,110 mAh battery, which is close to six percent larger than the 2,942 mAh battery in 2018’s model.
Breaking that down into actual use, a 6% battery increase could see users get another three hours of internet browsing on a single charge, or the same in wireless video playback – a huge leap forward and another selling point for Apple’s most popular 2018/19 smartphone.
“China’s ATL (Ameperx Technology Limited) has kicked off mass production of batteries for the successor to Apple’s iPhone XR forecast to be unveiled later this year, according to those close to the matter on June 9. Battery packaging will be done by another Chinese firm, Huapu Technology,” said The Elec on its website.
“The new batteries will have a capacity of 3110mAh, which is more than a 5% improvement from the 2942mAh of the iPhone XR.”
What’s interesting to note is that the new battery would still be smaller than the battery in the iPhone XS Max, but because that device consumes more power, the XR comes out on top and delivers better battery performance and life, on average.
However, the iPhone XS Max and XS successors are expected to see increased battery packs, too, so it will be interesting to see whether they offer improved battery life and performance as standard.
It will also be interesting to know the weight of the devices if featuring a bigger battery, as Apple has traditionally tried to make products light.
Earlier in the year, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was expected to increase the batteries on its iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR models by 20 to 25 percent, 10 to 15 percent, and 5 percent respectively.
It’s expected a larger battery pack would help to accommodate two-way wireless charging, expected to launch on all three models.
